Patrick’s goal was to “tell the story of someone’s life in a way that honors and makes meaning in retrospect about how their life unfolded.” He saw this as a creative act, but it was also a demanding one.
He had to gather information from grieving family members, synthesize their stories, and weave them into a coherent and impactful narrative.
In the past, Patrick would spend hours after all his interviews trying to distill everything he had heard. This was time-consuming and emotionally draining. With his Second Brain, Patrick began capturing his conversations with families using an automatic transcription app, and saving transcripts, obituaries, photos, and other materials into a dedicated project folder.
This allowed him to be fully present during interviews and relieved the pressure of remembering every detail.
Instead of a heavy lift at the end, Patrick started spending 15 minutes after each interview to progressively summarize the transcripts, highlighting only the most resonant parts.
This simple act of distillation made it much easier to connect the dots and craft a meaningful narrative for the memorial service.
As Patrick said, “Using my first brain only for what it is best at is freedom.” His Second Brain freed him from the burden of remembering and organizing, allowing him to focus on what mattered most: being present with grieving families and honoring the lives of their loved ones.
This story highlights the potential of a Second Brain to go beyond personal productivity and support creative acts of service. It shows how by externalizing information and distilling it to its essence, we can free our minds to focus on higher-level tasks such as connecting ideas and crafting meaningful narratives.
